MIT computer science and engineering professor Tommi Jaakkola has been named the inaugural chair holder of the Thomas M. Siebel Professorship in MIT’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) and the Institute for Data‚ Systems‚ and Society (IDSS).

A leader in the field of machine learning‚ natural language processing (NLP)‚ and computational biology‚ Jaakkola is widely respected as an original researcher and outstanding mentor who has made high-impact educational and editorial contributions. He currently teaches the “hottest class at MIT‚” according to the Boston Globe: Introduction to Machine Learning‚ course 6.036.

The new professorship was established through a significant contribution by veteran software entrepreneur and C3.ai CEO Tom Siebel. Siebel also founded the Siebel Scholars program‚ recognizing the most talented students at the world’s leading graduate schools of business‚ computer science‚ bioengineering‚ and energy science. An active community of more than 1‚100 Siebel Scholars form an elite network of leaders whose ongoing collaboration and mentorship is making a significant and lasting impact on today’s most pressing challenges.
